Andy Warhol Jean Cocteau (F & S II.329A)
Meaning & History"Both in breadth of stylistic influence and flamboyance of personal lifestyle, these two artists indelibly touched the wide circles of intellectuals, dilettantes and social butterflies with which they surrounded themselves"
Jean Cocteau is a screenprint published by the artist in 1985 of the famous French illustrator and poet. It was produced to commemorate the opening of The Severin Wunderman Foundation which had a collection of Jean Cocteau memorabilia. Warhol has appropriated the Cocteau illustration against a stripe-coloured background incorporating the French flag.
The relationship between the portrait sitter and the artist can be seen to be a close one, as like Warhol, Cocteau dabbled in an array of mediums, and was respected as an auteur.
Both in breadth of stylistic influence and flamboyance of personal lifestyle, these two artists indelibly touched the wide circles of intellectuals, dilettantes and social butterflies with which they surrounded themselves. Warhol, well known for referential artworks and subjects, references his predecessors across his works, most notably in Joseph Beuys and Man Ray. Explore Andy Warhol prints for sale.
