Joseph Beuys created the Free International University for Creativity and held public debates on themes surrounding political and social cultural issues.

This screenprint is Andy Warhol’s tribute to the legendary post war artist Joesph Beuys. Created from 1980-1983, Joseph Beuys State I is one of three of a series created to commemorate the artist. Joseph Heinrich Beuys was a German artist whose work was sociopolitical, reflecting themes of humanism and sociology. He created the Free International University for Creativity and held public debates on themes surrounding political and social cultural issues.

This print depicts four repeating images of Beuys’ face in black ink across a bright blue background, emphasising the intensity of his stare as he gazes out towards us. His expression is neutral and unreadable as he dons his iconic hat. The image was taken in 1979 at the Hans Mayer gallery (Dusseldorf), where Warhol took a polaroid of the artist. Despite his claims of being ‘politically neutral’ himself, Warhol said of Beuys: “I like the politics of Beuys. He should come to the US and be politically active there. That would be great… He should be President.”, showing he had a great admiration for the artist, despite the rather drastic differences in their artistic practice. Whereas Warhol explored the phenomenon of celebrity and consumer culture as a reflection of the American experience, utilising instantly recognisable motifs and symbols, Beuys’s art aimed to go beyond the material and visual surface, incorporating a lot of sculpture and performance art into his pieces. Beuys often referred to his creations as "actions," with each sculpture and performance intended to promote democracy and critical thinking. Despite these differences in their approach to creating art, both artists had a mutual respect for each other, and Warhol’s choice of Beuys as subject matter proves Warhol’s desire to immortalise the artist, acting as a sign of respect to his impact on the art scene.
