Joseph Beuys: Slate III (F & S II.244)
“I like the politics of Beuys. He should come to the US and be politically active there. That would be great… He should be President.” Andy Warhol
This portrait depicts the revolutionary German artist Joseph Beuys, as a part of Andy Warhol’s three-part series Joseph Beuys. The print was created across the period 1980-83, and is a spectacular and colourful rendition of Beuys. The original photograph was taken at the Hans Mayer gallery in Dusseldorf in 1979, which is one of the few occasions that the artists met in person. In this photograph, Beuys’ stare is piercing and intense, much like the persona Beuys created for himself. However, this print is one of the most colourful ones from the series. His portrait is printed four times across the board, each in a different colour: blue, white, yellow, and red, all placed against a bold turquoise background. However, this portfolio stands out from Warhol’s other series depicting iconic figures and celebrities. The colours of Beuy’s face are almost inverted, it is the outlines of his features that stand out, rather than the features themselves. This makes his face harder to read, perhaps a reference to Beuy’s mysterious persona. This shows the way Warhol developed and experimented with the screen-printing process, continuing the process from some of his earlier and more recognisable series, such as his soup cans or Marilyn series.
Although both artists are titans of post-war art in their own right, it is fair to say that the practices and approaches to their art remained entirely opposite. Beuys become famous for his ‘extended definition of art’, where he believed that ideas of social sculpture had the potential to reshape the politics of society. His art was incredibly sociological, and a lot of his art was rooted in art theory and philosophy. Despite their differences in artist practices, this series acts as a mark of mutual respect between each artist, showing that despite their differences they were able to appreciate each other’s approaches.
