Kiku (F & S. II 307)
"This choice of mystical colours aligns with the flower's symbolic properties, adding an otherworldly quality to the prints."
Kiku is a screenprint from the Kiku portfolio of 3 created by Warhol in 1983 for the Gendai Hanga Center, a Tokyo museum. This collection is a rare and striking example of Warhol’s exploration of Asian aesthetics. Each print features the chrysanthemum flower, known as 'kiku' in Japanese, rendered in a dusk colour palette.
The Kiku, or chrysanthemum, symbolises longevity, royalty, and perfection. While real chrysanthemums typically appear in white, yellow, or pink, Warhol reimagines them in vibrant blue and fuchsia hues against a blue-to-purple gradient background. This choice of mystical colours aligns with the flower's symbolic properties, adding an otherworldly quality to the prints.
