    Andy Warhol Kiss (F & S II.8)

iss is an evocative Andy Warhol screenprint on plexiglass created in 1966, drawing directly from a still of the artist’s groundbreaking film of the same title. Originally produced for the project Seven Objects in a Box, the work captures Warhol’s most experimental period, when he was actively redefining the boundaries between film, art, and performance. By repeating an intimate moment three times, Warhol confronts the viewer with closeness and desire. Kiss reflects the provocative spirit of the 1960s New York art scene and Warhol’s role at its centre, both as filmmaker and cultural instigator.

  • About Andy Warhol Kiss

Created in 1966, Kiss is an Andy Warhol screenprint on plexiglass that reproduces a still from his first film, Kiss (1963). The film, produced at Warhol’s studio, The Factory, featured artists, actors, and writers from New York’s avant-garde scene and presented three-minute sequences of couples, both same-sex and opposite-sex, kissing in near silence. At the time, its frank intimacy was considered provocative, with some cinemas refusing to screen it. In the screenprint, Warhol repeats the film still three times, intensifying the sensuality and emotional immediacy of the moment. The close-up composition confronts the viewer with intimacy, repetition, and duration, themes central to Warhol’s practice. Kiss exemplifies Warhol’s radical approach to desire, media, and the moving image translated into print.

    FAQs

Is Kiss Andy Warhol's first print?

No, Kiss was not Andy Warhol’s first print. It was a screenprint on plexiglass created for the Seven Objects in a Box portfolio. Kiss print is significant because it uses a still from Warhol’s own 1963 film of the same name. While it wasn't his first print, it was an early example of him presenting a print as a sculptural object by using layered plexiglass.

Is Kiss signed by Andy Warhol?

Yes the print is embossed with Warhol's signature, rather than hand-signed.

How rare is Andy Warhol's Kiss?

With an edition of just 75 (plus proofs), Andy Warhol's Kiss,  is considered rare within the context of his vast printmaking career, primarily due to its small edition size and unique materials.
