They perform a documentary service, usually consecrating their lives to keeping the glittering alternative alive and available for (not-too-close) inspection.” Andy Warhol

    Ladies and Gentlemen is a portfolio created by Andy Warhol in 1975. Amid a sexual liberation and gay rights movement, the Italian art dealer Luciano Anselmino commissioned Warhol to create a series on drag queens. Warhol sent his assistants to the Gilded Grape, a gathering place for the Black and Latinx transgender and drag community to scout out models for the portfolio. The club was an inclusive space for all members of the queer community, and carried such a captivating energy that Warhol would bring friends there when they visited to see the ‘seedy underbelly’ of Manhattan. Turning away from his usual style of appropriation, Warhol took polaroids himself of his sitters, using them as the base for the final screenprint.

    The sitter within this screenprint has been identified as ‘Broadway’, although little more is known about her other than her signature written on her polaroid. Warhol created nineteen paintings of Broadway from 47 polaroids taken of her. In this print, she holds her hand under her chin, as she looks seductively towards the viewer. In style with the rest of the portfolio, Warhol transposed blocks of colour across the print, highlighting certain features such as her black wig or her pink lips.

    This portfolio offers an authentic and powerful depiction of the queer community in 1970s America, and the spirit and confidence of the sitters still ooze out of these screenprints today.
