Andy Warhol Lamentation (F & S. II 388) For Sale

Lamentation is from a portfolio of three screenprints executed in 1986 By Andy Warhol, depicting a series of dance poses performed by one of the most famous American dancers Martha Graham.  This print was published to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance and to honour the woman who transformed modern dance.

Graham famously stated that "dance is the language of the soul.” Warhol creates a real poignancy to this work, capturing Graham’s essence that fluid movement, dance could unveil the deepest layers of human emotion. "The Lamentation" focuses on a ballet performed in a seated position, with Warhol's use of purple creating a haunting and captivating image. This poignancy is exemplified through the use of shadow and light within the print, through a contrast of purple and black which seems as if Graham has been backlit whilst performing on the centre stage. The original image was taken from a photograph taken by American photographer Barbara Morgan in the 1940s.
