    Man Ray (1974) is a screenprint by Andy Warhol honouring the pioneering artist Man Ray, a central figure of Dada and Surrealism and, by Warhol’s own admission, his favourite artist. Based on a Polaroid photograph, the portrait reveals a rare warmth and intimacy within Warhol’s oeuvre. Unlike many of his high-contrast celebrity images, this work adopts a more painterly approach, suggesting personal admiration as well as artistic dialogue.   • About Andy Warhol Man Ray

    Created in 1974, this large-format screenprint translates a Polaroid of Man Ray into a richly coloured and subtly shaded portrait. Known for his experimental photographic techniques and dreamlike compositions, Man Ray profoundly influenced twentieth-century visual culture. Warhol’s treatment here departs from his typical “Day-Glo” palette and bold graphic blocks, instead modelling the sitter’s features in layered tones set against a deep red ground. Man Ray appears contemplative, cigarette in hand, gazing away from the viewer. The sensitivity of the rendering suggests genuine affection. After Man Ray’s death in 1976, Warhol recorded the film Letter to Man Ray, reflecting on their meeting. Throughout his career, Warhol paid homage to artistic predecessors, from Joseph Beuys to Renaissance masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, reinforcing his dialogue with art history.
