    Andy Warhol Mao (F & S II.125A)

Mao (1974) is a screenprint on wallpaper by Andy Warhol depicting Mao Zedong, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China. The work belongs to a pivotal moment in Warhol’s career when political imagery and global power figures became central to his practice. Between 1973 and 1974, Warhol produced nearly 200 silkscreen paintings of Mao, reflecting his fascination with propaganda, mass reproduction, and the cult of leadership. By translating Mao’s highly circulated official portrait into the language of Pop Art, Warhol interrogates the relationship between political authority, media saturation, and image-making.

  • About Andy Warhol Mao

Following the historic visit of U.S. President Richard Nixon to China, Mao’s image gained renewed prominence in American consciousness. Warhol himself remarked on China’s suppression of individuality, noting that “the only picture they ever have is of Mao Zedong.” Unlike his monumental Mao canvases and earlier 1973 portfolio, this 1974 wallpaper print adopts a more intimate approach, utilising Warhol’s signature blotted-line drawing technique. Mao’s face becomes the focal point, dramatically heightened with vivid purple tones. This expressive colouration disrupts the rigidity of the original propagandistic source, subtly rebelling against the uniformity Warhol associated with the regime. As with other political works—such as Vote McGovern and later depictions of Lenin—Warhol examines how repetition and mass media construct modern political iconography.
