“I really got to love the athletes because they are the really big stars.”  Andy Warhol.

This print depicts ‘the Greatest’ Muhammad Ali. Regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century, it is fitting that Warhol would add the Heavyweight champion to his collection of muses.

Warhol presents use with the profile of Ali. His expression is stern and stoic, representing his strength as a fighter. As with other prints Warhol created in this period, Warhol frames Ali’s face with geometric blocks of colour. A block of coral pink cuts across his forehead, whilst dashes of white and turquoise highlight his ears and shoulders. The eyes of Ali are the most realistic feature, whilst the rest of his profile is sketched in a dynamic collection of lines, adding movement and anticipation to the print. This print is certifiably electric, the print is buzzing with energy as if Muhammad Ali is having a moment of contemplation, before stepping into the ring. The reference photo was taken on a polaroid camera by Warhol himself, depicting a more contemplative side of Ali that is not usually seen due to his role as a fighter.

Warhol once said, “I really got to love the athletes because they are the really big stars.” As Warhol’s portfolios often depict the glamourous stars and cult of celebrity, it is no wonder that Warhol’s attention was drawn that of famous athletes. This portfolio represents a shift in the notion of celebrity within the popular culture of the 1970s – athletes were now just as adored as film stars and musicians. As a result, this portfolio immortalises the greatness of Muhammad Ali, showing the different facets of him: not only was he a boxer, but a strong activist, which comes across greatly in this series. It is no surprise that this portfolio has become as beloved as Muhammad Ali himself. Perhaps Muhammad Ali is not such an unlikely pop art icon as it first seems at a first glance…
