    Andy Warhol Paloma Picasso (F & S II.121)

“I never think about Picasso, I just think about Paloma.” With this remark, Andy Warhol captured the spirit of his 1974 screenprint portrait of Paloma Picasso. Published in the portfolio America’s Hommage à Picasso, the work pays tribute not to her legendary father Pablo Picasso, but to Paloma herself — a designer and cultural figure forging her own identity. Blending Pop Art sensibility with subtle references to Cubism, the portrait reflects Warhol’s fascination with celebrity, lineage, and self-invention in the mid-1970s art and fashion world.

  • About Andy Warhol Paloma Picasso

Created in 1974, Warhol’s Paloma Picasso presents a striking, stylised likeness of the designer. Blocks of vivid colour partially obscure her left eye, subtly evoking the fragmented visual language associated with her father’s Cubism. The visible side of her face, however, directly engages the viewer, asserting confidence and individuality. Despite the portfolio’s homage to Pablo Picasso, Warhol emphasised his personal connection to Paloma, whom he counted as a close friend. At the time, she was establishing her own creative legacy, notably through her celebrated jewellery designs for Tiffany & Co.. As with many of Warhol’s portraits, the image captures not only the sitter but the cultural atmosphere she embodied — a blend of high fashion, independence, and emerging feminist confidence in 1970s society.
