"Depicting royalty, the epitome of untouchable public figures, fits perfectly into Warhol’s artistic vision..."

Published in 1985, the "Reigning Queens" portfolio by Andy Warhol features sixteen prints of four formidable monarchs: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each queen is depicted in four prints, their repetition echoing the look of postage stamps. The 'Royal Edition' of these prints includes diamond dust, adding a touch of luxury and glamour.

The distinctly non-American theme of royalty sparked controversy when George Mulder organized the first U.S. exhibition of "Reigning Queens" in New York in June 1985. Warhol himself expressed frustration, stating, "I had my opening at Leo Castelli’s to go to, of the Reigning Queens portfolio that I just hate George Mulder for showing here in America. [It was] supposed to be only for Europe—nobody here cares about royalty and it’ll be another bad review."

Queen Beatrix had been ruling the Netherlands for five years when this portfolio was created, having ascended the throne in 1980 after her mother abdicated. Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Beatrix were known to be close friends, both serving as symbols of patriotism and strength for their nations in the aftermath of two world wars. Warhol’s ability to recognize and capture significant cultural moments is evident in this portfolio, reflecting his fascination with celebrities, whether political or fictional. Depicting royalty, the epitome of untouchable public figures, fits perfectly into Warhol’s artistic vision.

In his portrait of Queen Beatrix, Warhol uses a wash of lilac for her hair and clothing, highlighting her pale face—a face familiar from coins and stamps. He emphasizes her opulence by depicting her in a dazzling tiara, brooch, and earrings, contrasting against the light purple and white shades of the background. This print stands out from the rest of the portfolio as Warhol has not overlayed colourful blocks atop the queen’s portrait. Instead, this portrait is left plain and simple, as the regal expression of Queen Beatrix speaks for itself. This screenprint exudes an air of mystique, underscoring the untouchable nature of the royal family. The "Reigning Queens" portfolio epitomizes power, wealth, and status, intertwined with undeniable glamour.
