"This portfolio fits in perfectly with his artistic milieu, after all what could be more glamourous, untouchable and adored than royalty?..."

Published in 1985, the "Reigning Queens" portfolio by Andy Warhol features sixteen prints of four formidable monarchs: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Every queen is portrayed in four prints, reiterating the design of postal stamps. Diamond dust is added to the "Royal Edition" of these prints to give them a more opulent and glamourous look.

When the portfolio was created, Queen Beatrix had ruled the Netherlands for just five years. She ascended the throne in 1980 after the abdication of her mother. Queen Beatrix and Queen Elizabeth II were known to be excellent friends, acting as two symbols of patriotism and female authority within the aftermath of World War II. This reflects Warhol’s uncanny ability to capture the significant culture moments of a decade. Previous to this portfolio, much of Warhol’s work delved into his fascination with celebrity culture and glamour, as seen in his Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor portfolios. This portfolio fits in perfectly with his artistic milieu, after all what could be more glamourous, untouchable and adored than royalty?

In this print, Beatrix’s hair and clothing are depicted in a wash of royal blue, which draws attention to her blue face, a recognisable face which would be repeated across coins and stamps. Beatrix was one of the richest Royals in the world, and Warhol captures her wealth, emphasising her dazzling tiara, brooch and earrings that contrast against the blue and brown shades of the background. Conducive to his typical style of this period, Warhol transposed colourful blocks of colour over the Queen’s portrait, as she smiles regally at the viewer. An air of mystique exudes from this screenprint, emphasising the untouchable nature of the Royal Family. This portfolio is one of power, wealth and status, intertwined with irrefutable glamour.
