"Andy Warhol treated Margrethe, not as a ruling monarch, but as a Pop Art icon, akin to his other celebrity portfolios, such as Mick Jagger or Marilyn Monroe..."

Released in 1985, Andy Warhol's "Reigning Queens" portfolio showcases sixteen prints featuring four distinguished monarchs: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each queen appears in four prints, reminiscent of postage stamps in their repetitive layout. The 'Royal Edition' of these prints is embellished with diamond dust, enhancing their luxury and allure.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, a member of the Danish royal family, reigned from January 14, 1972, until her abdication on January 14, 2024, marking exactly 52 years on the throne. She became the second-longest reigning Danish monarch, following Christian IV. At her birth, only males could ascend the Danish throne due to 1850s succession laws. However, a constitutional change in 1953 allowed female succession if no male siblings were present. In 2009, the law of succession was further modified to absolute primogeniture. This complex history of female succession in Denmark adds significant depth to Warhol’s portrayal of Margrethe.

The portfolio's focus on European royalty stirred controversy when George Mulder organized its first U.S. exhibition in New York in June 1985. Warhol himself was displeased, commenting, "I had my opening at Leo Castelli’s to go to, of the Reigning Queens portfolio that I just hate George Mulder for showing here in America. [It was] supposed to be only for Europe—nobody here cares about royalty and it’ll be another bad review."

Warhol’s screenprints exude female power and authority. Margrethe is depicted with hair and clothing in a black wash, emphasizing her profile—a familiar image on coins and stamps. Hand-drawn dashes of vibrant yellow adorn her hair and brooches, while blocks of colour accentuate her necklace, highlighting her opulence. In the "Reigning Queens" portfolio, Warhol presents Margrethe not just as a monarch, but as a Pop Art icon, similar to his portraits of celebrities like Mick Jagger and Marilyn Monroe. The use of contrasting colours draws attention to her ornate necklace, earrings, and dazzling tiara, reminding viewers of her unique status as royalty.
