"The portfolio is an empowering depiction of female power and authority, as each monarch depicted ruled their country based on their birthright, rather than marriage."

The Reigning Queens portfolio was published in 1985, and features sixteen prints featuring four formidable ruling Queens: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each queen is represented in four prints, bathed in different Pop Art colours. The ‘Royal Edition’ of Reigning Queens incorporates diamond dust in each print, adding an element of luxury and glamour. The distinctly un-American nature of Royalty provoked outrage from Warhol when George Mulder organised the first exhibition of Reigning Queens in New York in June 1985, saying "I had my opening at Leo Castelli’s to go to, of the Reigning Queens portfolio that I just hate George Mulder for showing here in America. [It was] supposed to be only for Europe—nobody here cares about royalty and it’ll be another bad review."

This print features Queen Ntombi of Zwaziland, where Warhol appropriated the official portrait of the queen regent into a Pop Art masterpiece. Warhol saturated the colours of the portrait, immersing the monarch in warm orange, blue and green hues. The portfolio is an empowering depiction of female power and authority, as each monarch depicted ruled their country based on their birthright, rather than marriage. Ntombi is depicted smiling warmly at the viewer, as Warhol’s dynamic hand drawn lines accentuate the necklace and dress of the Queen.

Warhol always carried a fascination for celebrity worship. Prior to the "Reigning Queens" portfolio, much of Andy Warhol's art explored his fascination with celebrity culture and the allure of glamour, exemplified by his famous portfolios of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. The "Reigning Queens" series seamlessly aligns with this artistic theme, celebrating the ultimate symbols of glamour, reverence, and untouchability: royalty.
