"Unlike the soft pastels of previous screenprints, Warhol has made this colour scheme bold and brilliant, like the Queen herself..."

Released in 1985, Andy Warhol's "Reigning Queens" portfolio showcases a series of sixteen prints, each depicting one of four prominent queens: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each monarch is represented in four different prints, echoing the aesthetic of postage stamps. To enhance the luxury and allure of these prints, the "Royal Edition" is adorned with diamond dust, adding a glittering, opulent finish.

This screenprint depicts the Queen Ntombi of Zwaziland, who was acting as Queen Regent during the time Warhol created this screenprint. The Queen is transformed into a queen of pop art, akin to the likes of Warhol’s previous muses, including Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy. Warhol had previously depicted male leaders, including Richard Nixon and Chairman Mao in similarly bold colours, which suggests Warhol sees these female leaders on the same par as world-wide male ones. Queen Ntombi portrait is emphasised through Warhol’s use of clashing colours. In this screenprint, Warhol emphasises her skin tone against a blue background, which makes it as an especially important print within the portfolio as Ntombi is the only Queen of colour. Unlike the soft pastels of previous screenprints, Warhol has made this colour scheme bold and brilliant, like the Queen herself. The use of Warhol’s innovative screen-printing technique allowed the images to be repeated, much like that of a coin or a stamp.

Warhol added a block of green colour on the Queen’s right shoulder, which matches the style of Warhol during this period, for example in his Mick Jagger portfolio. As Warhol was notorosuly fascinated with the glamour and adoration of celebrities, depicting monarchy and royalty seems to be the perfect Warhol portfolio.
