Andy Warhol S&H Green Stamps (F & S II.9)
Meaning & History"S&H Green Stamps exemplifies some of his most finely detailed, hand-drawn artistry."
S&H Green Stamps is a lithograph produced in 1965 for the artist’s exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. Comprised of a seemingly infinite number of S&H stamps in neat rows, the print demonstrates Warhol’s unique talent and eye for reproducing commercial imagery. The notion of the ‘ready-made’, as populated by Marcel Duchamp, refers to ordinary objects altered by artists to then become works of art.
Warhol’s S&H stamp and its many saturated duplications create a hypnotic effect on the eye. Aside from its arresting visual power, the work is also an important marker in his experimentation in medium. Warhol utilised three individual layers of different colour ink to create his final image. Eventually modifying this process to using silk screens in other popular works, S&H Green Stamps exemplifies some of his most finely detailed, hand-drawn artistry.
The importance of this seminal work is evidenced by its appearance in many private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern of Art.
S&H Green Stamps represent Warhol’s uncanny ability to find beauty in the mundane. Repeated and reused, the motifs become more than the sum of their part. This style would be echoed in later works including Purple Cows, The Cover of Flash and Magazine and History where Warhol would tightly pack repeated images in close succession.
