Shoes is a portfolio of five screenprints with diamond dust published by Andy Warhol in 1980 from the Shoes Deluxe Edition portfolio. 

Warhol’s choice to use a low contrast between the dark grey background and the black shoes allows the diamond dust to truly shine, making the shoes appear as if they are set against a starry night sky. To fully appreciate Warhol’s otherworldly treatment of these feminine accessories, one must consider his origins as a commercial illustrator. He mused after creating the Shoes portfolio: ‘I’m doing shoes because I’m going back to my roots. In fact, I think maybe I should do nothing but shoes from now on.’ 

Warhol’s decision to create a portfolio focused on shoes reflects a long-standing affection for footwear that predates his commercial success. Early in his career, Warhol worked as an illustrator for fashion advertisements. In the mid-1950s, he was commissioned by the shoe manufacturer I.Miller to produce illustrated ads for the Sunday edition of the New York Times.
