Andy Warhol Sidewalk (F & S II.304)
Meaning & HistoryGrauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood is famous for its handprints and footprints of movie stars. In Sidewalk, Warhol explores the notion of celebrity worship through its tangible indents.
Sidewalk is a screenprint executed by Warhol in 1983, working from a photograph the artist took outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The reappropriated image shows the signatures, handprints and footprints of stars such as Cary Grant and Judy Garland: an iconic feature of the Hollywood theatre was that stars were asked to leave their mark on the cement. The screenprint is a fantastic example of Warhol’s obsession with celebrity without employing portraiture: Sidewalk plays upon society’s need to be near to, and have remnants of, celebrities in the form of autographs. The artist has amplified the image by turning the background red, as opposed to the real concrete. Warhol was well known to draw from celebrity culture and Hollywood was no exception. The film industry proved fruitful inspiration for the artist and we would repeatedly draw from icons of the silver screen famously Marlyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Liz Taylor. -
