Skulls (FS II.159) is part of a series of 4 screen prints created by Andy Warhol in the 1976 Skulls portfolio. Each screen print depicts a different type of lighting on the skull, exploring the ways shadows form across the skull. 

Within the broader scope of Warhol's oeuvre, Skulls aligns with a recurring theme of death and violence that the artist frequently explored. This theme also inspired his acclaimed and commercially successful Death and Disaster series, which includes around seventy works addressing catastrophic subjects like electric chairs, car accidents, and presidential assassinations. While Skulls doesn’t depict such specific disasters, it engages with the same fundamental issue by reinterpreting the classic still life genre. Warhol produced very few still lifes during his career, and when he did, they were often in photographic form, making this example particularly unique. The silkscreen version of the Skulls portfolio is held in the Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland.

The photographs subsequently inspired Warhol’s approach to depicting the interplay between light and shadow in this work. II.159 is notably grim, with the red lower half of the print resembling a pool of blood.
