Skulls (F & S. II 160)
In the broader context of Warhol's work, Skulls reflects his recurring exploration of death and violence.
Skulls (FS II.160) is part of a series of 4 screen prints created by Andy Warhol in 1976 Skulls porrfolio. Each screen print depicts a different type of lighting on the skull, exploring the ways shadows form across the skull.
In the broader context of Warhol's work, Skulls reflects his recurring exploration of death and violence. This theme also fueled his acclaimed Death and Disaster series, which features around seventy pieces addressing dramatic subjects such as electric chairs, car accidents, and presidential assassinations. Although Skulls doesn’t depict specific disasters, it engages with the same underlying theme by reimagining the traditional still life genre. Warhol rarely created still lifes, and when he did, they were often photographic, making this silkscreen example particularly distinctive. The Skulls portfolio is housed in both the Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland. The photographs that influenced this work led Warhol to explore the interplay of light and shadow.
