Andy Warhol Space Fruit: Oranges (F & S II.197)
Meaning & HistoryWarhol revolutionises the still life with this work that is emblematic of his screen printing style.
Space Fruit: Oranges is a screenprint published by the artist in 1978, a work that preceded a series of still lifes entitled Space Fruit. It is an incredibly rare work from an edition of ten.
Warhol has poistioned two vivid oranges in front of four black and white ones, with the surrounding image evoking outer space, with its contrast of light and shadow. Warhol’s treatment of fruit as immaterial and abstract is a bold one, as objects of the natural world painted from antiquity to the plein air painting of the impressionists. Warhol shows his ability to take classic iconography and reimagine its possibilities: the shadows underneath the monochrome oranges on second sight appear like black holes.
When looking at Space Fruit one thinks of the American occupation with space in the 60s and 70s. In 1962, Warhol had actually been enlisted by NASA for an art programme. It is no doubt that Warhol’s forward-thinking views and style embodied the image that NASA wanted to project for its project.
