Andy Warhol U.N Stamp (F & S II.185)
Meaning & HistoryThis work is important as it is one of the strongest examples of Warhol’s artwork for fundraising.
U.N Stamp is a lithograph created in 1979, published by the United Nations. Warhol produced the print, which bears the new U.N stamp of the time, to raise funds for the educational programs of the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
This work is important as it is one of the strongest examples of Warhol’s artwork for fundraising. Though he had produced a number of works for charities (such as Merce Cunningham’s dance school), this philaetic art print stands apart as the U.N is of global significance.
A central principle of the U.N is that of unity and international cooperation. In Warhol’s stamp he has arranged curved and rectangular shapes of different colours across each other, connoting the coexistence of different countries. Each print bears a large signature in felt tip on the right side and a small signature on the bottom right corner. UN Stamp recalls Warhol’s earlier work S&H Green stamps showcasing a continuity within the artist's choice of subject matter and a return, almost nod, to his earlier career.
