Banksy Pulp Fiction Meaning & History
Pulp Fiction draws inspiration from the 1994 Quentin Tarrantio film of the same name.
First appearing as a street piece in London’s Old Street, Pulp fiction was subsequently released by Pictures on Walls in 2004 in a signed edition of 150 and unsigned edition of 600. Pulp Fiction, as the name suggests, draws inspiration from the 1994 Quentin Tarrantio film of the same name. The artwork shows the two lead characters hitmen Vincent and Jules standing side-by-side at an angle poised and ready to shoot their weapons. However, instead of guns they hold two bright yellow, stylised bananas.
Pulp magazines were inexpensive fiction magazines that were published from the 1890s to the late 1950s. The term "pulp" derives from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. In contrast, magazines printed on higher-quality paper were called "glossies" or "slicks". The artwork, whilst referencing the film, could be seen as a commentary on the throwaway nature of street art in a highly self-referential and self-deprecating manner. The subversive humour and twist of which Banksy is known for can be seen through the replacement of guns with bananas which brings a surrealist sense into the piece.Through Banksy’s oeuvre, the artist makes reference to pop culture. Other works include I Fought the Law (referencing the band The Clash) Ronald McDonald in Napalm and the Acid House smiley face in works such as Have a Nice Day. Explore other Banksy prints for sale.
