The Cowboys and Indians portfolio features ten screenprints by Andy Warhol, released in 1986, including Indian Head Nickel. In this print, Warhol reproduces one side of the "Indian head nickel," focusing on its grayscale tones and white lines to highlight the intricate details of the coin’s design. The year "1913" is emblazoned over the neck of the depicted Native American figure, whose profile faces the word "LIBERTY."
Minted between 1913 and 1938, the coin was designed by sculptor James Earl Fraser, who was commissioned by the Taft administration. Although Fraser was known for his depictions of Native Americans, the nickel's design is a composite image rather than a portrayal of a specific individual. This generalisation has been criticised for presenting a stereotyped and homogenised view of Native Americans rather than reflecting their true diversity. Warhol also included a buffalo image on the reverse side of the nickel in his Nickel Buffalo print.
In Indian Head Nickel, Warhol highlights the generalised portrayal of Native American identity that pervades mainstream American culture. By juxtaposing this image with others from the series, such as Mother and Child and Geronimo, as well as historical figures like General Custer and Teddy Roosevelt, Warhol invites viewers to consider the loss of nuance and individuality when broad stereotypes dominate American media.Publications
