Soup Can by Banksy was originally a small painting 'installed' by the artist in MoMA, New York in 2005 with the caption plaque 'Tesco Value Tomato Soup'. The work remained on display in the msuem for six days before being discovered and removed by the curators. In an interview the artist said, "After taking a photo, I stuck around for five minutes to see what would happen. A ton of people came up to look at it, then walked away confused and slightly offended . . . I felt like a true modern artist."
Soup Can is a parody of Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup Can series of paintings and prints from 1968. Numerous critics have drawn a parallel between Banksy and Warhol, both exploring repetition, consumerism and in this case, irreverent humour of the art market.
