David Hockney An Image of Ken (M.C.A.T 284)

An Image of Ken (1984) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney from his innovative Moving Focus series. The work portrays Kenneth Tyler, the influential printer who played a pivotal role in Hockney’s technical and artistic development during his time in California. Tyler, known for his collaborations with major artists including Roy Lichtenstein, introduced Hockney to new methods of combining painting and printmaking. This portrait serves not only as a tribute to a close collaborator but also as a reflection of Hockney’s evolving visual language and experimental approach to portraiture.

  • About David Hockney Image of Ken

In Image of KenDavid Hockney presents a striking and unconventional portrait of Kenneth Tyler. The composition initially appears as a monochromatic, etching-like image focused on Tyler’s head and shoulders. However, the face is deliberately distorted, with overlapping features that disrupt natural symmetry. His eyes, nose, and forehead seem to face one direction, while his chin and mouth turn toward a telephone receiver held at the side, creating a fragmented and almost dual perspective. Tyler’s oversized glasses, furrowed brow, and suggested moustache add a subtle humour to the depiction. This layered construction gives the impression of movement and shifting viewpoints, transforming a traditional portrait into a dynamic exploration of perception, identity, and visual representation.
