‘In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can’t divorce the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and space without time.’ David Hockney

Image of Gregory is one of David Hockney’s most complex compositions from his groundbreaking, Moving Focus series: In Image of Gregory, the artist explores many of his fascinations; including notions of space and perspective, pays homage to old art movements, such as Cubism, elevates portraiture through modernist forms, and brings together many of his artistic practices such as photographic collage and painting into the lithograph form.
In Image of Gregory, Hockney portrays his one-time lover, Gregory Evans, who became one of his long-term male muses. Detached from a romantic liaison, Hockney re-imagines Evans as a dandy, man about town suavely dressed in pinstripe shirt, silk necktie and chic loafers. He has bushy, curly hair and holds a cigarette in hand as if deep in philosophical thought. Hockney famously has an encyclopedic knowledge of art history and the exaggerated facial features could recall Francis Bacon’s triptych forms.
Yet Hockney uses this rendering of his one-time lover to decimate the traditional notions of portraiture through abstraction and cubist techniques. The artist slashes the portrayal in two: the first smaller frame forms Evan’s head and facial features, with dramatic blue eyes, downturned nose and floppish hair perfectly evoking the suave gentleman stereotype. The hands we see in the first frame are repeated in the larger bottom frame, but this just shows his crossed legs pinned to the floor from his comfortable armchair.
Hockney creates a background in Image of Gregory segmented in bold colourways and fractured tones that evokes Picasso’s famed paintings of his muse, Dora Maar. Hockney purposely segments the image to give the viewer multi perspectives of Evans: as if to highlight how artistic identity is merely about representation, Hockney moves the image away from a single viewpoint, in an artwork that affords the viewer space and dimension.
