    Ink Test, 19-21st March 2019 is one of David Hockney’s artworks created from his new hometown, Normandy, Western France. The subject, an ink test, relates back to earlier prints, such as Ink in the Room, Spilt Ink with Tests but here depicts the simple ink test process an artist does before starting a work.
    Ink Test depicts a melange of colours, objects, motifs, and words that show the ink numbers: a saturated image that resembles growing nature and plant life, sprouting from the ground, as the spring season arrives suggesting renewal and rebirth. The plant life is created in different green shades, depicted in word bubbles ‘yellow green,’ ‘deep green,’ ‘olive green’ as well as reds and browns of the soil ‘sanguine,’ ‘scarlet,’ ‘red brown.’
    Hockney’s beloved dog, ‘Ruby’ looks onto these splurges of colour, flora and fauna: the scene is abstracted but explores themes of landscape, space and location intrinsic to Hockney’s work from his early years in Yorkshire to the bright lights of California and now the ‘paradise’ of Normandy, France.
