    David Hockney’s Small Study of Lightning is a more colourful and abstract rendition of the Lightning print from his innovative, The Weather Series, 1973. In this series, Hockney explored groundbreaking new print techniques to convey the ephemerality of various weather conditions, and created ten prints in various stylisations depicting atmospheric effects.
    Most of these artworks were actually created in the Gemini studio, Los Angeles, since the city didn’t experience most of these harsh weather conditions, and Hockney, alongside master printer, Kenneth Tyler, used spontaneous measures to create the dramatic effects: old pictures show Hockney as using a broomstick to press colour onto the lithographic stone.
    Tyler once said of Hockney in an interview, ‘he was a draughtsman. He came in and was able to draw on the spot. He was an artist that worked with his hands. He liked materials, moving things and making things.’
    In Small Study of Lightning, Hockney depicts that same lightning effect of Lightning, but instead creates a smaller white ink fork to depict a bolt of lightning, which in this print travels through a mass of foreboding clouds created in red and black. One white ink fork runs off the top of the lithograph whilst another thinner line threads through the whole composition.
