    Study of Lightning Medium is a monochrome lithograph depicting lightning from David Hockney’s innovative 10 print, The Weather Series, 1973. Like two other prints in the series (Lightning, Small Study of Lightning) Hockney in this print illustrates the stylisations possible within the lithograph meets print technique, which he devised working on this series. Hockney also shows how to evoke mood and emotion through the depiction of these dramatic, transient weather conditions: ‘the subject matter is really the weather drawn, not just the weather itself.’
    Study of Lightning Medium, unlike the other two Lightning prints, focuses on the sky, depicted in dramatic black inks saturated with white clouds that suggest movement and motion. The abstract scene hints at skies filled with water, about to descend on the landscape, engulfed by a dark thunderstorm.
    Hockney manages to enact a mood and emotion so heightened through the weather conditions, that the images don’t just suggest weather conditions, but how these relate to the ebb and flow of life and the human experience.
