One of 24 Ipad drawings turned digital prints from his groundbreaking Yosemite Suite series, created on the Apple Ipad, in which Hockney depicts areas of his beloved Yosemite National Park, ‘California is always in my mind.’

    Hockney once said, ‘Like people, trees are all individuals,’ and it is the individual beauty of the simple tree which is the focal point of this lively artwork. The central tree is a commanding presence, the viewer is positioned gazing up at it, perhaps it is one of the Mariposa trees in the popular Mariposa grove, towards the southern side of the Yosemite National Park. These trees are often 30 ft tall and Hockney requires the viewer to consider the immensity of it, since our gaze is positioned at the roots looking up.
     Although there are two leafy abstracted shapes on either side of the main tree, they do not distract from the looming tree highlighted by the dramatic violet hued background. The purple haze background as well as the rich blue, green, burgundy, black suggest that this is evening time in the woodland.
     
    Hockney doesn’t try to disguise this is a digital drawing: he uses the Ipad brushes app to achieve layering and textural effects. By creating the recognisable scene from splotches and dots, shading and jagged lines, Hockney merges the beauty of nature with technological innovation to create a whole new artistic language for future generations.
