Hockney famously loved nature, he saw it like a higher source, which connects all of us: his Yosemite Suite paintings are a visual love letter that transcends location to the essence of nature itself: ‘I am constantly preoccupied with how to remove distance so that we can all come closer together, so that we can all begin to sense we are the same, we are one.’

Yosemite Suite No.15 is one of the most popular of Hockney’s pioneering Yosemite Suite series, which uses the Ipad for the first time to create drawings turned digital prints of the Californian landmark, Yosemite National Park.

Whilst these images ponder on the power of nature itself, they relate back to Hockney’s early landscape works of both California and even his hometown, Sledmere in Yorkshire. However, uniquely, in Yosemite Suite No.15, he features a human presence, which creates multiple layers to the image: the viewer is viewing the tourists viewing the dramatic natural landscape.

Hockney creates a realistic narrative  in Yosemite Suite No.15, as we can immediately recognise the ridge from the parking space that overlooks the famous El Capitan granite cliff face and towering waterfalls. The artist plays with space and perspective: the viewers eye is drawn to the undulating vast rock faces in the background as if we are looking up to the cliff tops. He uses a soft palette and colour tones to shade in these dramatic precipices contrasted with the verdant greens of the land beneath. We can configure these are tourists, created in abstract shapes, they represent a human presence compelled by the magnanimous forces of nature’s greatest spaces.
