    Yosemite Suite No.17 is one of 24 Ipad drawings turned digital prints from David Hockney’s seminal Yosemite Suite series, in which he continued to push boundaries of artistic innovation, by using the newly launched digital medium.
    Yosemite Suite No. 17 depicts a scene from the bare expanses of the Yosemite National Park, around five hours drive from the centre of Los Angeles, in which Hockney explores colour, form and pictorial spaces through a digital lens.
    Whilst Yosemite Suite No.17 is one of the most abstracted in colour and perspective from the artworks in the series, the famed park location is not immediately recognisable, Hockney suggests a human presence via the cars in the parking lot. Whilst there are parking lots in Yosemite National Park, this one overlooking the river, which is probably the Merced River, running throughout the Yosemite Valley, is likely artistic invention.
    The artist uses multiple colour tones in sky, sea blues and lilac against a bright yellow surface, which is punctuated by the red and black palette of the parked cars. We cannot ascertain what exactly lies in the middle of the river, arguably it is a small granite rock, but Hockney creates shadows and layers that give the image textural depth.
    In Yosemite Suite No. 17, Hockney creates a mysterious and compelling image, that is part Hockney’s homage to his beloved Yosemite and part artistic invention.
