    Yosemite Suite No. 18 is part of David Hockney’s large Ipad drawing series, Yosemite Suite, based on the visual splendour of the Yosemite National Park. In a similar vein to Yosemite Suite, No. 16, Hockney utilises the new digital technology to focus on the dense woodland and to immerse the viewer as if they are part of the scenery too.
    The artwork depicts just a singular tree in the recognisable dense forest land of the Yosemite National Park; the image is cropped, though, so the viewer is left to focus on the thick ponderosa pine tree from the roots to halfway up the bark with a sparse array of decaying branches. Whilst the artist conveys the essence of trees in the distance of the woodland, the viewers gaze is directed to the singular tree and woodland which sits on the print surface.
    Unlike other prints in the Yosemite Suite series, Hockney shows his unique colourist’s eye by creating this drawing all from one tone: he utilises one verdant green shade, adopting differing shades and brushstrokes to create an image of textural depth and intrigue.
    In Yosemite Suite No.18 Hockney uses technology to celebrate the beauty of nature, to keep re-inventing his artistic expression, and to highlight the need to keep preserving these precious natural landscapes for both public enjoyment and American cultural identity.
