David Hockney Yosemite Suite No.23 For Sale

Yosemite Suite No.23 returns to the famous Ahwahnee Hotel, neighbouring the great Yosemite National Park, depicted in Yosemite Suite No.1 of David Hockney’s pioneering 2010 series, Yosemite Suite.

Hockney depicts the striking stone and wood faced hotel, designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood 1925, in a darker colour palette in this artwork, creating a more dramatic façade around the hotel building than in Yosemite Suite No.1. Similarly to Yosemite Suite No.1, the artist includes a few tourists outside the building, which he utilises as a framing device to denote the scale of the familiar Yosemite granite cliffs and mountains which loom in the background of the image. The building in pale green limestone with burnt orange windows and facades, as well as the shadowy human figures in front, heightens the immensity of the background landscape,  rendered in a bold purple shade.

Hockney’s ability to push artistic boundaries is particularly evident in Yosemite Suite No.23, in which he juxtaposes various uses of colour shading, blurring with dots, lines and blotches for contrasting effect between the hotel building, front garden and majestic landscape.
