David Hockney Yosemite Suite No.3 For Sale

Yosemite Suite No.3, 2010 is a signed artwork by David Hockney from his pioneering Yosemite Suite series, the first time he had created drawings on an Ipad (2010 was the first year Apple brought out the digital technology).

Hockney ventured to one of his favourite Californian landmarks, the Yosemite National Park, to capture the verdant landscape through the digital medium: in doing so he creates a discourse with art history and luminaries of centuries past who have used the location as inspiration. To name a few: William Zorach created a fauvist rendition of the Yosemite National Park in his 1920 work, Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite Valley, whilst Japanese artist, Chiura Obata was so entranced by the area he made 100 works on Yosemite in six weeks after his 1927 visit.

Yosemite Suite No.3 is illustrative of how handmade the whole series feels – Hockney approaches his new medium with zeal and doesn’t attempt to hide the digital renderings. It is more abstract in depiction of the Yosemite landscape than many of the others in the series, almost as if Hockney designed it with printing in mind: Hockney takes his Impressionist like eye and translates it onto the Ipad. Comprising fragmented patches of glitches, dots, lines and blotches amongst the segments of colour, we cannot ascertain the specific scene but as a viewer can feel immersed in the unique textures and contours of the Yosemite terrain: by just glancing at the image, the viewer can instinctively feel the meditative power of nature.
