    David Hockney’s Yosemite Suite Series was the first time he used the newly launched Apple Ipad to create ‘drawings’ turned digital prints: it was fitting he ventured to one of his favourite landmarks, Yosemite National Park, California to enact the visual grandeur of the natural landscape.
    Yosemite Suite No.5 is indicative of the vastness of the Yosemite National Park and Hockney’s eye to take simplest of scenes and create it with majesty, texture and depth via the Ipad digital medium.
    Hockney once commented, ‘Anything simple always interests me,’ and this simple road lined by the vastness of these all enveloping, hugely tall trees set the scene for an image where nature drives the narrative. The road is long and winding, we can’t see where this road takes us, it is as mysterious as the workings of nature itself.
    Hockney boldly focuses on dramatic colourways: leafy green, deep red and bright purple. He clearly emulates the winding roads of his famous 80’s and 90’s era landscapes of his hometown, Sledmere, Yorkshire just without the houses (see Road to York Through Sledmere) but he doesn’t make any attempt to hide the fact this is a digital rendering. We can see the lines, dashes, dots, and sploshes: the fragmented imagery adds energy and bewilderment to this immersive composition, which evokes a sense of magic about the adventures of life, travelling into the great unknown.
