    La Sortie, 1991, is a signed print, one of eight artworks, from Roy Lichtenstein’s Interior series which both references the commodification of American culture of the time and parodies his pop art genre.
    La Sortie is a cropped-in composition unlike the other prints in the series, such as Red Lamps, The Living Room, focusing on just a few interior motifs: pale blue armchair, side table, a maroon coloured lamp matching to the curtains and a landscape picture that could be the artist’s own Rain Forest print. With all his pop art characteristics, Lichtenstein transforms this mundane interior scene into something visually dynamic, through bright colours, graphic and delineated lines and ben day dots. Our gaze is immediately drawn to the striped wall background, which by lying at angles to its flat pictorial plane creates a multi-dimensional illusion to the viewer’s eye.
    The familiar, everyday scene is reinvented by Lichtenstein’s pop art gaze: what is the suggestion behind the small detail of a woman’s leg cut off by the edge of the composition. In titling the print, La Sortie, (‘The Exit’), Lichtenstein cleverly leaves the viewer to create our own narrative around a scenario that hints at something more menacing than his comfortable and homely depiction.
