"There’s no human presence, mass consumerism or even recognisable pop art spaces: Morton A.Mort instead interprets alpine scenes, angular lines and woodgrain motifs, so synonymous with the famed Die Brucke artists of the German Expressionism movement."

Morton A. Mort is one of seven prints by Roy Lichtenstein in his Expressionist Woodcut Series, the artist’s first major use of woodcuts in his oeuvre. Morton A.Mort is significant as the only print in this series, and one of only a few over Lichtenstein’s whole portfolio, which depicts a sole landscape. There’s no human presence, mass consumerism or even recognisable pop art spaces: Morton A.Mort instead interprets alpine scenes, angular lines and woodgrain motifs, so synonymous with the famed Die Brucke artists of the German Expressionism movement.
The composition is intricate and visually dynamic: there are three horizontal lines interwoven with geometric shapes that are outlined with wide black lines, filled with flat areas of colours or stripes in this abstractional woodcut print. There are also rows of concentric circles made with black wavy lines, and areas full of jagged triangular shapes, as well as solid forms of block colour, including black, white, forest green and blue and white diagonal stripes.
Morton A.Mort is a play on the word, ‘amort,’ meaning on the cusp of death, which adds a beguiling element to the artwork: by eliminating all tangible references in this abstract landscape, Lichtenstein references the Expressionism movement’s obsession with nature as an antidote to capitalist culture, as the root of harmony. He encourages the viewer to see beyond modern consumerism and connect to the circadian rhythms of nature’s life.
