"The scene is dramatic but not easy for a viewer on first glance to configure: the distressed, sharp faced pilot gazing diagonally at a plane in the corner frame, and a bold action bubble with the words, CRASH."

Lichtenstein’s Reflections on Crash, 1990, is one of his most powerful prints from the Reflections series. His pop art characteristics are instantly recognisable: primary colours (red, yellow, blue) a distressed sharp-faced figure, bold slogans, and scattered ben day dots. Depicting a war scene, Lichtenstein so favoured in the 1960’s era of his career, titled ‘Our Army at War,’ from a comic book about the Second World War, in Reflections On Crash, Lichtenstein satires the pop art form, with which he is so synonymous by slashing - literally and figuratively - his own distinctive pop art signatures.

The viewer sees the familiar image but it is shrouded in mystery, obscured by diagonal strips and ben day dots, as if the action is being viewed through shards of broken glass: the printed frame is overlaid with contrastive visuals and reflections over its glazing. The scene is dramatic but not easy for a viewer on first glance to configure: the distressed, sharp faced pilot gazing diagonally at a plane in the corner frame, and a bold action bubble with the words, CRASH. The slanted, diagonal stripes created in a reflective material slice the composition, encouraging the viewer to re-examine the narrative.

Reflections on Crash is illustrative of the advanced techniques Lichtenstein created later in his artwork, through a merging of lithograph, screenprint, relief and metallized PVC collage.

A dynamic, intricate work, Reflections on Crash brings together storytelling, commercial imagery, and printmaking with Lichtenstein cleverly exploring what it means to make art.
