Roy Lichtenstein’s Reflections on Minerva, one of seven prints from the Reflections series created from 1988-90, directly relates back to Lichtenstein’s early comic book work: the original source for the print was the Nov/Dec 1948 edition of the comic book ‘Wonder Woman’, illustrated by Harry G. Peter. All the artist’s pop art signatures are immediately recognisable: the distressed super heroine, with the speech bubble explaining ‘Merciful Minerva,’ the rich colours and the bold ben day dots. In this storytelling, Wonder Woman regularly invoked the Roman goddess, Minerva, who was traditionally known as the goddess of wisdom but also embodied war and romance.In Reflections on Minerva, the comic girl goddess, Minerva, is partially obscured by the reflective lines – red and black diagonal stripes slash through her ben day dotted face. Hand to her forehead in distress, Lichtenstein gives us just enough clues to keep us guessing at what exactly could be her narrative.
