Water Lily Pond with Reflections, 1992 is one of six prints from Roy Lichtenstein’s groundbreaking Water Lily series, 1992, in which he directly referenced Claude Monet’s famous Impressionist paintings of Water Lilies, and in doing so Lichtenstein conflated artistic traditions and boundaries.

Water Lily Pond with Reflections is a striking composition that brings together technical elements from many other of Lichtenstein’s series: particularly, his fascination with using light and reflection to distort the viewer’s perspective of an image. (see his Reflection, Mirror series’)

In Water Lily Pond with Reflections, Lichtenstein wanted to create a refracted surface image to appear to the viewer as reflected water, so he sought out new materials and processes for his ‘mechanical’ printed base. For the first time, in this series’, the artist works with stainless steel as his primary material: he created the dotted, shiny picture plane by screen-printing enamel on processed and swirled stainless steel with painted aluminium frame (or painted wood frame). Lichtenstein translates the subject matter and motifs with all his signature pop art characteristics: large sections of ben day dots, diagonal stripes, primary colours and graphic black outlines.

In Water Lily Pond with Reflections, Lichtenstein creates a beguiling screenprint that asks the viewer to question the relationship between artwork and observer. And in distilling the old European master’s tradition into his pop art genre he breaks all boundaries of cultural form.
