    Edition 632 unique prints divided as follows: 40 portfolios containing four prints each, signed and numbered in pencil on verso. The remaining 472 prints were used by architects Johnson & Burgee for the Hotel Marquette, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1981, upon removal from the hotel, these prints were signed, numbered 1/470 – 470/470, and dated in pencil on verso, and two were marked “HC”; they were stamped in black on verso “Hotel Marquette Prints.”

    This portfolio stands out within Warhol’s oeuvre due to its timeless subject matter, moving away from Warhol’s usual themes of consumer culture and celebrities.

    This screenprint was created by Andy Warhol in 1972. The print is part of a larger Sunset series, which depicts the same image in a variety of colours, as if capturing the ever changing nature of a sunset’s gradient throughout the evening. The portfolio was commissioned by the architectural firm Johnson and Burgee to produce 632 prints to celebrate the opening of the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis. The print captures the fleeting moment of a sunset through a gradient of pinks and purples, complete with a blue sun in the centre of the print. This portfolio stands out within Warhol’s oeuvre due to its timeless subject matter, moving away from Warhol’s usual themes of consumer culture and celebrities. 

    The theme of the sunset seems to hold sentimental value for Warhol. In 1964, he began working on a short film titled Sunset, but the project was never completed. Warhol filmed sunsets in various locations, from San Francisco to New York, yet he admitted, “I filmed so many sunsets for that project, but I never got one that satisfied me”—a statement that aptly captures the fleeting nature of sunsets. Now, through the medium of screenprint rather than film, Warhol appears to have achieved his goal of capturing the perfect sunset, one envisioned in his own palette rather than through the lens of a camera.
