Campbell’s Soup Cans II: Vegetarian Vegetable is a screen print created by Andy Warhol in 1969, part of his iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans II portfolio, which features ten new soup flavours from the American food company Campbell’s. Building on his original 1968 series, Warhol revisited the iconic soup cans a year later, utilising an improved screen-printing technique that allowed for a more precise and faithful reproduction.
This portfolio meticulously mirrors Campbell’s original design, capturing the essence of the everyday product with remarkable accuracy. Throughout his career, Warhol explored themes of consumerism and our relationship with mass-produced goods. By transforming these commonplace objects into works of art, he blurred the lines between mainstream culture and high art. The enduring influence of the Campbell’s Soup Cans series can be attributed, in part, to the cultural significance of Campbell’s soup itself, a comforting staple for many. With flavours for every taste and occasion, Campbell’s soup embodies the democratisation of food—affordable and accessible, much like Warhol’s approach to art.
