  • "Do not store indefinitely in a dark place hoping it will increase in value. This work is not intended as an investment commodity - for display purposes only."

Released in 2019, Thrower by Banksy takes the iconic motif of Love is in the Air and reworks the legendary flower thrower. Originally released as an signed edition of 300 at Banksy’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) pop in Croydon, South London of the same year.

The work uses arguably Banksy’s most famous motif, and adapts the main figure into a triptych across separate panels. Banksy has interpreted the Flower Thrower figure in various forms over the years including the rare CCCP Love is in the Air. The image originally appeared on the West Bank wall which divides Israel from Palestine, measuring some 760km. In the artist’s own words, the wall “essentially turns Palestine into the world’s largest open prison”.  Returning to the disputed region in 2005, the artist produced a further nine works in support of the freeing of Palestine against oppression and imperialism. Fast forward 10 years, 2015 witnessed the artist produce a further four works amongst the bombed out ruins of the Gaza strip and opened the Walled of Hotel in Bethlehem that proudly boasts  ‘worst view in the world’.

Not only is the work visually creative but the process behind the creation is equally so. The GVP website described the production as, "This is Banksy’s first experiment with a new technique for making prints - spray the stencil onto processing film and expose the result directly onto a silk screen. This avoids photography or computer manipulation and creates a super accurate analogue representation of gestural mark making. In other words - looks pretty dope."

In typical Banksy fashion, the work was accompanied by a set of funny assembly instructions that rounded off with this message, "Do not store indefinitely in a dark place hoping it will increase in value. This work is not intended as an investment commodity - for display purposes only." thus critiquing the commodification of his artworks.

Protest appears across Banksy’s oeuvre - often inviting the viewer to question their passivity in society. Most notably within the Love is in the Air canon, Festival and across the placard rats series which includes Get Out While You Can, Because I’m Worthless and Welcome to Hell.
