I work much better in chaos… chaos for me breeds images. I always think of myself not so much as a painter but as a medium for accident and chance. […] painting unlocks all kind of valves of sensations within me which returns me to life more violently. I wanted to paint the scream more than the horror.

A chronicler of the human condition, Francis Bacon became one of the most acclaimed artists of the 20th century through his relentless exploration of the human figure, animals, Greek mythology and religion. Born in Ireland in 1909, he turned seriously to art in his late twenties after seeing Picasso's drawings at the Galerie Paul Rosenberg in 1927-a moment often cited as the catalyst for a career that, over the next four decades, would establish him as one of Britain's most important artists.
Bacon's work confronts the brutality and vulnerability of existence, manipulating colour, shape and perspective to strip his subjects down to their most pained and contorted states. His paintings and prints, frequently arranged as diptychs and triptychs, possess a haunting, almost savage beauty. Through grotesque, balloon-like figures, he delves into the spiritual, physical and emotional dimensions of being human, capturing both the vitality and the dense psychological weight of human presence.
In turning the living ghostlike and the dead disconcertingly alive, Bacon demonstrates a masterful command of form and atmosphere. His work blends the sensitivity of an artist with the ferocity and turmoil of post-war society, creating images that feel as personal as they are universal.
