Andy Warhol George Gershwin ( F & S. ii 231)
The series was commissioned by Ronald Feldman and Susan Feldman, who devised a list of 10 prominent Jewish figures of the 20th century.
George Gershwin is an Andy Warhol print from 1980, created as part of Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century portfolio. Warhol nicknamed the portfolio ‘Jewish Geniuses’, as each portrait depicts a different Jewish person that had a profound impact on the 20th century in his signature pop art style. By the 1980s, Warhol had perfected his screen printing technique, and each piece within the series is a beautiful cacophony of bold shapes and bright colours layered on top of each other, with Warhol’s signature hand drawn lines fine tuning the details of each portrait.
George Gershwin was a renowned American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned popular, jazz and classical genres. Some of his most famous works include An American in Paris (1928) , and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which included the hit "Summertime". Interestingly, Warhol's relationship with Gershwin stretches back to his early career in the 1950s as a commercial illustrator. Warhol created the artwork for two Gershwin album covers, "Porgy and Bess" and "Rhapsody in Blue." This fusion of music and art illustrates Warhol's diverse subject matter and a strong admiration for musical pioneers. The composition of the screenprint is broken into four roughly even rectangles; red, pink, yellow and green. His face is in profile, and he looks to the right. Above the blocks of colour, Warhol has hand drawn lines to emphasise details on certain parts of his face, such as his eyes, hair and ear. At the back of his head, Warhol has drawn a cacophony of manic lines dancing and wiggling out of the brain of Gershwin. Here, it is likely Warhol is referencing Gershwin’s musical mastery, and the way music springs from his mind like an improvised jazz solo.
This portrait is one that is dynamic, eye catching, and socially significant. It is no surprised this series has become highly sought after by collectors. It exemplifies Warhol’s ability to explore the legacies of individuals who have left a much stronger impact on the world than a fleeting moment of fame.
