Andy Warhol Gems (F & S II.186 - 189)
Meaning & History"The ultimate symbol of opulence, Warhol’s Gems treat his often-visited artistic themes of glamour, fame and money in still-life form"
Gems is a portfolio of four screenprints published by the artist in 1978, coming from a small edition of twenty. Each print aside from 11.89 is unique, and they depict beautiful gemstones such as rubies, emeralds and tourmalines.
The ultimate symbol of opulence, Warhol’s Gems treat his often-visited artistic themes of glamour, fame and money in still life form. The prints are relatively large in size and through an amalgamation of sketching and collage the artist is able to create the impression of real depth in the gemstones. In 11.89 the gem’s purple and blue detailing on each facet of the stone mirrors glistening.
Warhol’s Gem series is often compared to the series that is immediately placed after within the F & S catalogue raisonne - Space Fruits. Blending both the collage effect seen in works such as Paloma Picasso and being a four part portfolio these two series capture Warhol’s ability in both choice of colour and his skill in composition.
