Andy Warhol Grapes Portfolio Print (F & S II.190 - 195) For Sale

Grapes is a portfolio of six screenprints published by Warhol in 1979. Each large screenprint depicts a bunch of grapes in particularly vivid colour combinations. In these remarkable still lifes, Warhol takes a traditional art-historical image – hanging fruit, and is able to render them almost unrecognisable. 

Warhol’s Grapes appear in colours such as mint green, fuschia pink and blue but never their natural colour: the artist has cleverly contrasted the natural with the artificial, a frequent interplay within his work. Something edible becomes a purely decorative object, one that is for aesthetic, rather than real, consumption.  Warhol’s skill with colour is at its best here, with each colour combination creating tonal harmony and being truly unique. Grapes recalls Warhol’s experiments with collage effects seen in the Gems series as well as earlier works including the Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio showcasing his ability as a colourist and his almost innate skill at composition. We see evidence of Warhol’s successful career as an illustrator with his work reminiscent of earlier series including Flowers Black and White and Flowers Hand-Coloured.
